Virtual and In-Person Mediation Services in Long Beach, CA

I've found that the biggest distinction between these two formats really comes down to commitment. When I mediate in person, both parties need to show up together, share the same physical space (though not always the same room if tensions are high), and set aside outside distractions to focus entirely on resolving their issues.

Commitment and Connection in Virtual Sessions

Online sessions don't demand quite the same level of commitment — it's simply easier to close a laptop and walk away. When that happens, I find it much harder to reconnect the parties and understand what triggered the disconnect.

That said, virtual mediation isn't without its own advantages. While I lose some ability to read body language and pick up on the subtle energy in a room, Zoom actually forces participants into sustained eye contact and face-to-face interaction in a way that can foster genuine connection — sometimes even more than sitting side-by-side at a table.

Technology I Use

For all my online sessions, I rely on Zoom. I make sure recording is disabled, and I use breakout rooms whenever parties need a private caucus — always with mutual agreement and only when it's appropriate to the situation.

How I Structure the Process

I begin every engagement with a free consultation — 30 minutes if I'm meeting with each party separately, or a full hour if both parties join together. For virtual clients, this usually starts with a phone call or email request, after which I schedule a Zoom meeting, either jointly or individually depending on preference.

Once both parties decide to retain my services, I move things forward by:

  • Emailing over the necessary paperwork, including the Mediation Agreement
  • Collecting payment through PayPal
  • Creating a private, recurring meeting ID so clients use the same link for every session going forward

Every session I run is kept strictly confidential.

Session Length

I tailor session length to each family's needs, but as a general rule:

  • Online sessions run about 2 hours
  • In-person sessions run about 3 hours

I've noticed that screen time tends to be more fatiguing for everyone involved, and it's genuinely harder for me to catch nonverbal cues and emotional undertones through a screen compared to sitting in the same room.

Confidentiality Online

I take privacy seriously in my virtual sessions. I set the highest available privacy settings for every meeting and encourage clients to use unique, platform-specific passwords rather than reusing old ones. I also make a point of discussing who else might be present in the room during a session, so everyone knows who's listening. When a caucus is needed, I move parties into separate breakout rooms.

Advantages I've Seen With Online Mediation

Several benefits stand out to me:

  • No commuting — clients save real time by joining from home or the office
  • Easier communication with an ex-spouse or other party — direct eye contact on screen tends to feel less threatening and encourages progress
  • Simpler to include additional participants — post-divorce families are often complicated, involving new partners or step-children, and virtual sessions make it easier to bring more voices into the conversation, which often speeds up resolution
  • More comfortable space to apologize, in my experience
  • Flexibility across distance — I can mediate for parties who live far apart, keep unpredictable schedules, or are located in different states or countries entirely

Drawbacks Worth Considering

  • I recognize that not everyone adapts easily to this format.
  • Most people are wired for in-person, face-to-face connection, and that's especially true in emotionally charged situations like divorce or family conflict.
  • Some clients simply aren't comfortable with virtual interaction.
  • There's also the concern of someone secretly listening in without the other party's knowledge.
  • Because of this, I make it a priority to walk clients through how their choices during mediation can affect the long-term durability of any agreement we reach, so everyone fully understands what's on the line.

Fees

I offer flat-fee pricing across all of my mediation packages — details are available when we discuss which package fits your situation.

A Note on COVID-19

I recognize how much disruption this period has caused — job loss, childcare struggles, homeschooling, isolation, and strained social connections. I understand the toll this takes, and I'm here to help. Whether you need support working through finances, childcare arrangements, or COVID-related visitation disputes, or you're ready to begin a divorce mediation now, I'm available to guide you through it.
